UK Veg Gardeners

Does anyone know how long beetroot will store in sand over the winter?  We've had a bumper crop this year and pulled them at the weekend to store in a box of sand.  This is the first time we've had enough to store so we don't know how long they will keep this way.  Hopefully they'll keep until spring.

If you keep them cool but frost free they should store right through to late winter/early spring.

We never have sufficient to make it worth bothering with but I always grow some in containers and bring them into the greenhouse to picked as required.

Thanks Colin.  It will be great if they last until spring.  I'll store them in the garage.  Hopefully this winter won't be as harsh as the ones in recent years.

As Colin says, providing they are frost and damp free, you should have no problems.I store my carrots in exactly the same way

Thanks Darren.  I'd like to try storing carrots and parsnips this way but we never have enough (maybe next year).

PS: your blog gave me an idea on how to build my raised beds next year.  This will be a project next spring.

Your welcome

I covered my planks with polythene to preserve them longer

I expect them to last in excess of 5 years without rotting

that's interesting Colin as some of my beetroot are in containers and I didn't realise that I could just bring them under cover and they would carry on. I thought I'd sown them too late. Thanks for the tip.
