Anyone out there know how to remove really really really tough stubborn never-gonna-move labels from chutney jars? I've tried soaking in very hot soapy water but they refuse to fade let alone budge, which is a shame because I've saved the jars because of their shape and really would like to use them. I could stick a label on top, I suppose, but it wouldn't be the same.

Try a Bic razor,  but not a sharp knife or other such implement or you'll end up slicing a finger or two!
Use white spirit - it's magical stuff...
aha! thank you

Coarse sandpaper is safer than a razor/knife and you get to keep your fingers.

Just give the label a good rubbing which breaks the surface and then soak and you'll find the label disintegrates. You may have the residue of the glue but you can just put a new label over it.

I soak till soft then spray with fairy power spray and leave it to jellify, then the labels and glue are easier to get off. Had some dry cleaning fluid from france, that also worked, probably had white spirit in it!

soaking with sugar soap might work.

Such a lot of useful tips to try. Thanks to everyone. However, Sparkles wins again with Christina Perri's version of Jar of Hearts lol
absolutely-you got there before me
