As well as pulling the onions I thought I would dig out the shallots that have been a disaster. They aren't much bigger than when I put them in - they are about the right size for pickling though. I haven't done well with shallots over the last couple of years - last year they bolted and were unuseable. Previous to this i had always done okay - must be losing my touch.

Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on August 12, 2012 at 20:41 Most of my shallots bolted this year, Elaine. I lifted them a few weeks ago and have had them drying on wire racks in the greenhouse. Total yield about four pounds but as most had gone to seed I don't suppose they'll keep well. They will probably be a bit tough for pickling so I'm undecided what to do with them apart from using them in soups and stews.

I let other grow much bigger for the exhibition shallot class and also for the kitchen table
