UK Veg Gardeners

My cucumber seedlings are now ready to pot on, being about 3 - 4 inches high. I've kept them watered but haven't begun feeding yet and realise that I should do so soon. Is it normal for the true leaves to shrivel up or is something awful starting to happen? The other leaves look lovely and green and the plants are all growing well. Help please.

I think that once the seed leaves of any plant have fulfilled their purpose they shrivel and fall off. They certainly seem to on the plants I grow and, yes, my cukes are behaving the same as yours.

Phew that makes me feel a LOT better Colin. I thought I was in for a sleepless night so thanks. I will re-pot them tomorrow though.

my cucumbers have been the toughest for me to grow for some reason(first year veg grower here so pick yourselves up off the floor if these are like the simplest plants in the world to grow!!) I have only got 2 outta 4 seeds for the crystal apple ones and they seem to shiver and look weak and sickly whenever the temperature goes down, even on the windowsill, what do I feed them with?? and shall I just stick the big softies back in the propogators??mind you I think they're a bit tall....in defense of my seeming inabilities with seeds I have managed to get 14 healthy tomato plants, 5 squash, 25 spring onions, wild strawberries, a chilli and 5 peas on various windowsills(ok pride slightly less dinted lol :)

oh and Colin, whatever rain dance you did sure did work..I am eternally in your debt :) x

My cucumbers are always a hit or miss. Last year was definately a miss. Hoping this year will be better.

I just fed mine with the same stuff i used for my tomatoes. Or you can use the method with the nettles i think, thats what my grandad used all the time. Its one here on the nettles forum i think.

i wish it would stop raining :(

I drink water with cucumbers in it. Its very refreshing :)

I have grown Mohican F1 this year which are a Cucumber / Gherkin from Seed Parade.

Try Cucumber with Pimms even better......

Had to Google this one, yes, you can tie them onto a short trellis, going to grow mine in a similar way....

These are looking good Fred.  I am trying DT Brown's Diamant F1 for my gherkins.  I've just noticed it says they are borne on compact plants.  I was going to train them upwards, will I not be able to do this then?
