My onions are starting to swell now but one of them has sent up a lovely tall flower stem.
Can I leave it or should I remove it??
Thanks

Permalink Reply by Darren Blick on June 2, 2012 at 20:51 As said below, this is your onion going to seed
Due to the previous cold weather with the sudden hot turn, onions are found to be 'Bolting'
Pinch them off or all of the goodness will go to the seed rather than the bulb itself

Permalink Reply by Darren Blick on June 3, 2012 at 12:16 The stems thicken when they get too much feed or water
They are still fine for eating but will be significantly marked down if showing
Permalink Reply by Donna C on June 3, 2012 at 12:25 I've nipped the flower head off but should I take out the whole stalk?
Permalink Reply by Flighty on June 3, 2012 at 13:48 Donna yes cut it off, on the slant, as low down as you can go.
