They grow very quick at this time and soon get woody (ours are) so hurry up!
Hope this video clips helps...

When the silks at the end of the cob go dark brown carefully peel back the sheath to expose a few grains. Pinch a couple and the liquid should be creamy. If watery they're not ripe, and if creamy you've left it a bit late.
Enjoy, they're delicious!
Everybody's tomatoes have been slow to ripen this year due to a lack of sunshine, and warmth. Fingers crossed that they'll ripen soon now that the weather is nice.
Thank you both.... I still just have leaves no "silks" so im guessing either its not going to happen or they are slow too.. like the toms! Now runner beans is a different story, having to pick every day, already some frozen for Xmas
Permalink Reply by Flighty on September 5, 2012 at 20:19 Have the sweetcorn grown tassels at the top of the stem yet? If they have then the silks may have been and gone, so have a peek inside a cob. If not then I'm sorry to say that it's probably not going to happen.
As for the runners see my comment on your photo!
Ohhhh noooo they havent, loads of green leaves but no tassels or silks or anything
