I dont get very good results from seeds, but want to keep trying. I normally buy them as young plants. But can anyone give me any ideas on growing from seed

Leeks:- alot depends on the size of leek you are after. Leeks like a long growing seasons so sowing early helps to facilitate this. I have always sown my kitchen leeks as early as possible in a propagator, but Samantha's plastic mini green house will help provide the right conditions for germination. Leeks transplant easily so if you were to sown into a seed tray now it will give you plants to transplant by end of May begining of June
good Luck

Permalink Reply by Small Plot, Big Ideas on March 14, 2012 at 9:10 I can recommend the plastic greenhouse idea - I bought one at my local pound shop (for £10) and it's proved very useful because I have only limited sunny window space in my house/garage. I'm just starting to see some action now from the leek and carrot seeds I planted a few weeks back

Start off on a windowsill and move outdoors when the seeds have emerged and it is warmer. Remove the wrap after a week outside. Once you have three inches or so of green "grass" tip the whole lot out and plant out in final growing positions.
