I've just ordered some skirret seeds from Suffolk Herbs and was wondering if anyone has any first hand experience of growing this perennial root crop?
It was a popular vegetable in Europe up until the 18th century but has since fallen out of favour. The roots apparently have a sweet flavour, sometimes compared to carrots (it's in the same family), parsnips, sweet potatoes or salsify.
Once established, it sounds like it might be fairly hardy and resistant to pests & diseases but various sources say that germinating the seeds can be tricky. Might be better grown from rootstocks but it took me long enough to find the seeds!
Any information much appreciated.
