I'm growing asparagus in large containers. I have some plants grown from seed and some from bought-in roots although I don't expect huge yields.

Planting a permanent asparagus bed when you have limited space is not really an option but there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy that wonderful taste.

I've never even considered growing asparagus in pots wonder how successful it will be - keep us posted.

I'm doing it for my usual reason....just to see if I can, and because I have some asparagus seeds. The idea is to sow a small amount every year so that I have a succession of plants at all stages from seedling to exhausted and ready for the heap.

Asparagus does very well in containers, we had plants in large containers for five years before moving them into a railway sleeper bed lined with polythene - and then finally we lifted chunks of the bed at a time and slid them into where they are no on the veg garden (and doing very well).

In fact last Autumn we potted up quite a few Asparagus into 12 litre containers - the idea being to grow these in our veg tunnel and get an early crop - and then move out for the Summer when its needed for Tomatoes, Chillies, Cues etc. We have also done the same for strawberries and raspberries.

We have early carrots coming along well in tubs as well as various direct sown leaves and oriental veg. Next week we will be planting climbing peas into containers (again under protection) for an early crop.

The other 'must grow' container crop is sweetcorn as again you can produce and early crop - or alternatively you can grow on until the weather really cheers up and then move the containers out.

I reckon the size of the container makes all the difference, the larger the better for some things like courgettes.  I guess your greenhouses are heated - I don't think anything would germinate in mine - it is as cold as a freezer.

Good luck with your experiment Colin - knowing you it will succeed.

You are absolutely right Colin, everything should be given a go at least once.  Good Luck.

There is a now famous quote that 'one should try everything once except incest and folk dancing'

I used to enjoy ceilidhs but I'm not sure about the other!!
