UK Veg Gardeners

Hello. I went to the plot today and 3 of the sprouting broccoli had completely collapsed with wet soft stems from the bottom up. There's black mouldy spots too. Does anyone know what this is? I'm hoping it's weather damage - the general prolonged wet and cold - and not something worse. The other brassicas seem to be ok including about 4 other broccoli plants. Would love to hear any advice, suggestions or similar experiences. Thank you!

I imagine it was due to the weather

All the snow resting on it probably eventually soaked through

I've not had this before Gill but have mine protected by a tunnel net which keeps the snow off but is mainly to keep the pigeons at bay.  It looked really forlorn in the cold weather but has now bounced back.  I hope it's nothing more than the weather and you get a good crop off your other plants.
Thanks for replying Daren and Damo. Yes, i think you're right. I was just a bit confused by them being rotten from the ground up. But i suppose it's wet ground freezing and killing the roots - as the tops were ok. They do have netting over to stop the pigeons but the snow will have fallen through. Hopefully we'll get some spears off the remaining few.
