Funnily enough we had some in a casserole last night. Shop-bought I'm afraid. I grow self blanching types and plant close together in blocks of five so they shade each other. Wrapping something like plastic DPC membrane round the outside of the block helps with the blanching but you have to watch out for slugs as they like celery as much as we do.
I love celery! I don't grow them from seeds but regrow them from the tops of the shop brought celery. Each top can be cut into 3 or 4 parts to grow on.
I am experimenting with the beetroots now. Fingers crossed.

I am trying celery for the very first time this year, so far only about an inch high, any tips would be great as I no nothing about growing it. I am a container grower as I have a paved garden ..... thanks to my hubby ... NOT.
I haven't had any problems with slugs because I put egg shells around the vunerable plants such as lettuce, also I have read that slugs don't like lollo rosso letuce, so I plant plenty of that.
So experts, can you give a novice any tips on growing celery....... please
Permalink Reply by Colin Robinson on May 7, 2012 at 21:44 Deborah, I also grow celery in containers but they need massive amounts of water. If you stand your container in an old cat litter tray or similar you can keep it topped up quite easily. A good rich compost will also help to retain moisture.

Permalink Reply by Darren Blick on May 7, 2012 at 22:17 Deborah, like Colin says, they like plenty of water
Celery is a bog plant so you can imagine how much water they like
I literally flood mine
When I first start, I put so much water on the bed, I make it into a slush
Permalink Reply by Malagrowther on May 7, 2012 at 22:59 If you don't like celery you'll hate lovage. I had to get rid of our rampant lovage clump because it used to make me feel ill just brushing past it. Count me as a celery dissenter!
Thanks for the advice, I didn't know it needed so much water, glad you told me, because I have only given the usual amount, enough to wet it, I better go and give it a good soaking. Thanks again.
