UK Veg Gardeners

Hi My name is maureen, and I am a new allotment holder and have never grown veggies before.. I am a flower lover so this is all new to me.  My allotment looks so big 7 rods and has recently been roto-vated by a lovely chap of 84 years who has a large roto-vater on the back of a small tractor. if anyone has any tips etc I would be very grateful.. Looking forward to reading all the info on this website and hearing from anyone with some ideas.x

Keep it simple. Grow what you eat and don't be tempted to grow stuff you don't eat. Start with small amounts so that you find what grows well on your plot and build on what you learn year by year otherwise it will take over and become a chore instead of the delight it really is. Welcome to our world, I think you're going to love it.

Debbie puts it perfectly, but beware, allotmenteering is an addiction...

Absolutely grow what you like to eat, and also think about what tastes better freshly picked which the supermarkets can't deliver, for example tomatoes straight off the vine or sweetcorn cobs picked and boiled straight from the plot.  You can't buy that flavour but you can certainly grow it!

totaly agree with all that has been said i took my allotment on last year and started off like that this year i plan to be a bit more adventurous. your soon be hooked and flicking through all the mags to ideas. good luck and your defiantly in the right place for tips and help.

I agree with all that's been said. I'd also read a few books such as

Allotment Gardening: An Organic Guide for Beginners by Susan Berger

Above all take it steady and enjoy what you do!  Happy gardening.

Thank you very much for al the lovely replies to my first post your hints and tips are going to be very useful, I have been out today and bought a selection of veggie seeds and are in the throws of giving my greenhouse at home a really good clean ready to get planting, so exciting!!!!.. Need to get back to the lottie and start to prepare beds for my planting if I am right I can get my shallots in now???. what else can I get in now.. I have also purchased some fruit bushes bare rooted and have potted those up ready to go in when the beds are ready.. We are going to have some lovely mild weather down here on the south coast this week so no excuses must get my little bottom in gear..

Yes the shallots can be planted out now, as can the fruit bushes.  Happy gardening!
