Are You Up For the 52 Week Salad Challenge?

OK it's week two, but we're having so much fun growing leaves, shoots and flowers plus the odd bit of foraging for our salad, I thought you might like to join us! We have participants from the UK, USA, France, The Netherlands, Japan and Australia so far.

We'll be gathering together on the 4th Friday each month to see how everyone's doing and if you're on Twitter we've got plenty of #saladchat on the go, where the hints, tips, questions and recipes are flying fast.

I still have half a dozen containers of assorted lettuce and spring onions in the greenhouse which were sown last autumn and which have given us fresh leaves through the winter so far. All that I've sown this year is mustard and cress and some out of date peas for the green shoots.

We managed 52 week salads last year so I'm hoping we can do it again but with a bit more variety.

Hi Colin - thanks for your comment over at my blog. It'll be great to learn from your experience! Carl Legge in Wales has already done an inventory around his plot has around 20 varieties (grown and foraging) this month! It just shows what can be achieved. He's also sharing some tasty recipes :)

 

You mentioned samphire over at my place - I love it! People who don't have access to it like you, might like to grow agretti (Seeds of Italy name for the seed), which is similar and very tasty.

Yesterday and today I've planted salad leaves, sweet peppers, yellow tomatoes, land cress and salad bowl lettuce.  I still have parsley salad onions and coriander  growing and use them both in salads - so feel I have started the 52 weeks of eating home salad every day.  It's a brilliant idea.  http://livingin22.blogspot.com

 

Here's a pic of some of my salad leaves and spring onions which were sown last autumn.

I also found a tub of china rose radishes out on the plot but they've got a bit slug nibbled!

Fantastic Sandra :) I particularly like land cress - much easier to grow than watercress with the same peppery taste.

Aha - you planned ahead :) I'm hoping that'll be me in a year's time...

I have winter lettuce, land cress, wild rocket and a few other lost label salads growing under  a double fleece where the polytunnel used to be (it finally lost its cover in the storms)-had a peek today and all look well in spite of the permafrost we seem to have had today.

It sounds like you have a good haul for a plate of salad Jan. I've been making a new spot for my salad growing this year. I was thinking I need some of that fleece to get the soil warming up nicely.
